Azad Hind Fauj

Azad Hind Fauj

Azad Hind Fauj was established in Singapore with financial, army and political help from Imperial Japan. Three high INA members – Shahnawaz Khan, Prem Sahgal and Gurbaksh Dhillon – have been charged with conducting a war in opposition to British India and for murder and abetment to homicide. The trials have been credited with popularising tonyleopod Azad Hind Fauj in India at the time.

The trifecta of a Hindu, a Muslim and a Sikh soldier on trial was additionally a powerful symbol which united Indians, based on Havers. Japan – with their slogan of “Asia for Asiatics” – looked at Indian troopers as allies and wished to capitalise on their energy in opposition to its struggle with Britain.

He secured from Japanese military Chief of Staff, General Sugiyama, the agreement that INA would rank as an allied military within the offensive. The advanced headquarters of Azad Hind was moved to Rangoon in anticipation of success. The INA's personal strategy was to avoid set-piece battles, for which it lacked armament as well as manpower. Initially it sought to acquire arms and enhance its ranks by inducing British-Indian troopers to defect.
